SOME SUBSTITUTION RULES
The following are some of the more common substitution rules.
- Any Dominant 7th Chord may be preceeded by its related II-7 or II-7(b5)
- #9 and b9 are interchangeable as is #5 and b5
- A Melodic Tension replaces the 1st TRIADIC tone directly below it in pitch.
(exception: the 7th and #4 may replace the 1st TRIADIC tone above it.)
ASCENDING DIMINISHED CHORD RESOLUTION
- A diminished Chord is the same as the Dominant 7th(b9) Chord 1/2 step below it.
- #Idiminished resolves to II-7.
- #IIdiminished resolves to III-7.
- #IVdiminished resolves to V7 or I 2nd Inversion.
- #Vdiminished resolves to VI-7.
- VIIdiminished resolves to I
DECENDING DIMINISHED CHORD RESOLUTION
- bIIIdiminished resolves to II-7.
- bVIdiminished resolves to V or I 2nd Inversion.
AUXILIARY DIMINISHED CHORD RESOLUTION
- Idiminished resolves to I.
- Vdiminished resolves to V.
